What are the computer interface characteristics? The current VISSUMO controller outputs data at 13-bit resolution (8192 points) each for X and Y, and 8-bit resolution (256 values) for force. The VISSUMO controller supports communications with a host PC via either USB or an EIA-232 serial port. Windows drivers are available.
What are the characteristics of the touches that can be detected?Very light touches can be detected, as light as a 1 Newton (about 4 ounces of force). The controller can differentiate individual touches that are separated by more than 0.2 seconds.
What are the sizes of the touch sensitive panels? We have constructed panels from 4” up to 32” (100mm to 800mm) diagonally. Smaller and larger sizes are also possible.
Can VISSUMO units be sealed?Yes. NEMA-4 (IP 65) sealing of the force panel is possible. Clearly, sealing the rest of a display-touch system depends on system design.
Is VISSUMO technology patented?VISSUMO technology is based in a broad portfolio of patents and provisional patents.
How far does the touch surface travel? The sensors are designed to move 10 to 30 microns for a typical touch and up to 1.5mm maximum. At this point, they come in contact with a stop that prevents the sensors from being damaged.
Can VISSUMO support multi-touch applications? Not at this time.
How is the mapping of a touch to a program function accomplished?A VISSUMO panel works like a typical mouse. This mapping is the responsibility of the application developer or the operating system being used.
Is there a developer’s kit available?Yes; please
contact VISSUMO for current availability.
Can VISSUMO panels be used where there is ambient vibration?Currently, some vibration in low frequency ranges (below 30 Hz) will make VISSUMO panels report spurious “touches.” We are working to compensate for vibration.
Does the calibration drift over time, with temperature change, with supply voltage change, or with any other variable? One of our patent applications includes a self-calibrating feature. We have had units in the field since 2006 and have not had any calibration issues.
Under what circumstances is user calibration necessary? User calibration is required only once after installation.
What limitations of other touch technologies are eliminated by VISSUMO force panels? The performance characteristics of VISSUMO panels are comparable or superior to the best existing touch products. VISSUMO’s advantages include the integration of multiple materials in a single touch surface, elevated and irregular surfaces, surface attachments and penetrations in the touch surface. Their extreme durability and resistance to harsh use and vandalism make force panels superior applications for unattended and outdoor environments.
What is the practical lifetime of a VISSUMO panel? We have tested our components to over 16 million presses as of April 2009.
Why did VISSUMO invent Force Panel Technology and how long did it take? Our parent company
QSI Corporation was approached by a customer in 1998 with a requirement that could not be met with any existing touch-screen technology. In working with this customer, we re-discovered the concept of direct force measurement. Over the next six years we built numerous prototypes and developed knowledge of the capabilities of the technology. In 2004 we invented solutions to enhance the capabilities and make the product commercially viable. We have accelerated development since that time.
Are there any layers or film added to the touch surface?Unlike touch screens, no additional layers are added to the touch surface of a VISSUMO force panel that might block light from the display.
What is the origin of the VISSUMO name? The name VISSUMO is derived from two Latin words: Vis meaning force and Summa meaning sum or total. Highly descriptive of the technology behind the products, VISSUMO panels provide true “finger touch” interaction by calculating the actual force of a human touch on a rigid panel.
How do I integrate your touch panel into my product?VISSUMO’s engineers can work with customers to apply Force Panel Technology to their specific requirements. Alternatively, technical documentation is available for those who desire to do their own integration. In addition, our parent company QSI has incorporated VISSUMO technology into some standard product lines.
Does the VISSUMO touch panel require a controller board?Yes. The patented algorithms behind Force Panel Technology have been implemented a 75mm x115mm controller board. For large volume customers, the controller logic may be implemented on the customer’s board. Please contact us for licensing agreement details.
How far can the touch surface be from the controller board? The controller board can be located up to 3 meters from the sensors on the touch panel.
What are the panel’s power requirements? The controller board may be powered using the USB interface or a separate power supply (8-32V at 1.5W).
What materials can the panel surface be made of?The touch panel can be made from any rigid material, including metal, plastic, glass, stone, wood, laminate, composites and the new
eco-friendly materials made from reclaimed, recycled, or rapidly renewable resources.
What architectural design advantages does this technology offer? The
architectural design of a touch panel is limited only by a designer’s imagination. Panels can be made to virtually any size or shape and of any rigid material or combinations of materials. Irregular elements, cut aways, surface penetrations, and adhesions can be added for practical or aesthetic effect.
